1937
The Company began doing business operating under the corporate name of Southern Fire and Marine Insurance Company.
1953
The Company adopted the present name of American Southern Insurance Company. The Southern Fire and Marine name was retired. Roy S. Thompson, Jr. was named President.
1977
Roy S. Thompson, Jr. stepped down as President and assumed the role as Chairman. Calvin Wall became President and CEO.
1979
Scott G. Thompson assumed the role of President. Roy S. Thompson, Jr. became Chairman.
1988
American Safety Insurance Company, our surplus lines carrier, was incorporated.
1995
Atlantic American Corporation, led by J. Mack Robinson, a prominent Atlanta entrepreneur, businessman and philanthropist, acquired American Southern Insurance and its wholly owned subsidiary, American Safety Insurance Company.
1998
Georgia State University’s College of Business Administration was renamed The J. Mack Robinson College of Business in his honor.
2003
Roy S. Thompson, Jr. passed away at the age of 87 as Chairman Emeritus after a 50 year career at American Southern.
2004
Scott G. Thompson was named as both President & CEO.
2014
J. Mack Robinson passed away at the age of 90. He was considered by many to be “Atlanta’s First Tycoon”.
2017
Calvin Wall became Chairman Emeritus and retired from American Southern after 60 years of service to the company.

Robert Knight named President & CEO
